The story behind Sammy

Sam Luzania was born into La Luz del Mundo, the Mexico-based megachurch. His name, his friends, and his whole world were tied to the family at the top. “It was a system where one person had all the power,” he says. “Where what happened behind closed doors stayed behind closed doors.”

When he left, he was excommunicated. Overnight, the family and friends he had known his whole life were not allowed to speak to him. He spent years just surviving, paycheck to paycheck.

In 2019 the church's leader was arrested in Los Angeles. In 2022 he pleaded guilty to sexually abusing minors and was sentenced to 16 years and 8 months in prison. Sam has since heard hundreds of survivors tell their stories, and the pattern is always the same: one person with power, secrets kept by shame, and a child who doesn't have the words.

Now a father, Sam created Sammy to give kids those words and to show parents the signs. It's free, it works on any phone, and it has parent guides in Spanish, because the families with the least time and money deserve it most.

“I am a father. And I built this because I know what it costs to stay silent.”Sam Luzania

November 2026 — Sammy's Adventures, a free family library at sammyteaches.com, gives parents a simple way to start the hardest conversations of childhood. Each of its ten sets pairs a read-along picture book starring 9-year-old Sammy and his friends with a three-page parent guide, a family quiz, and a short song video. A set takes about 20 minutes, works on a phone, and costs nothing.

Its creator, Sam Luzania, grew up inside La Luz del Mundo, the Mexico-based megachurch whose leader pleaded guilty in 2022 to sexually abusing minors. When Luzania left the church, he was excommunicated and cut off from the family and friends he had known his whole life.

“I am a father. And I built this because I know what it costs to stay silent,” Luzania said. “They say hurt people hurt people. I am here to break that chain. Not for me — but for my children, for your children, for those who think their voice does not matter.”

The library starts where the risk is. About 90 percent of children who are sexually abused know the person who abused them, according to Darkness to Light, so Sammy's first lesson is a Safe Circle of trusted grown-ups and the difference between a surprise and a secret. Later sets meet kids where they spend their time: in game chats, on phones, and with AI chatbots. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children received more than 50,000 reports of financial sextortion in 2025, and a 2025 Common Sense Media survey found that 72 percent of U.S. teens have used an AI companion.

The ten topics are body safety, grooming, consent, respect, online gaming, sextortion, body image, trusted grown-ups, private information online, and AI “friends.” Every book can be read on screen or downloaded, parent guides on body safety, grooming, and consent are also in Spanish, and families who finish all ten lessons can print a “Sammy Safety Star” certificate.

Sammy's Adventures is free at sammyteaches.com. Song videos are also on YouTube at @SammyteachesLS5.

Story ideas

Five ways into the story, each with a source you can check.

A former insider on how silence protects abusers

Sam grew up inside La Luz del Mundo, where, he says, one person held all the power and secrets stayed behind closed doors. He talks about the same playbook in any place kids spend time: churches, schools, teams, and youth programs.

It's usually not a stranger

Most parents were raised on stranger danger. Sammy's first lesson is a Safe Circle of trusted grown-ups, and the difference between a surprise and a secret.

Kids are making AI “friends”

Built for the busiest parents

Free, works on any phone, about 20 minutes a lesson, with parent guides in Spanish. Made for families who don't have the time or money for a parenting class.

Interview questions

Good questions to ask Sam.

  1. You grew up inside La Luz del Mundo. What did that teach you about how abuse stays hidden?
  2. Why use a cartoon kid to talk about something this serious?
  3. Most of us were taught stranger danger. What should parents teach instead?
  4. What is sextortion, and what should a child do if it happens to them?
  5. Kids are chatting with AI. What does Sammy teach about AI “friends”?
  6. How can a busy parent start this talk tonight, in five minutes?
  7. Why is everything free?

Covering child abuse?

A few requests that keep kids safe in the story.

  • Share where families can get help: Childhelp at 1-800-422-4453, the NCMEC CyberTipline, and 911 in an emergency.
  • Use clear, accurate words: “child sexual abuse,” not “an inappropriate relationship.”
  • Keep the focus on prevention and on what parents can do tonight.
  • Never identify a child, and don't press a family for details.

More guidance: Darkness to Light's recommendations for reporting on child sexual abuse.
